Botox™ Injectables

Montreal Botox Cosmetic Clinic

1. OVERVIEW

Botox® Cosmetic is the cosmetic formulation of botulinum (a neuromodulator) which is a purified protein injectable that is Health Canada and FDA-approved for the temporary treatment of frown lines. The injectable has also been approved for use by Health Canada to reduce or eliminate forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet (wrinkles near the lateral aspect of the eyes). It is also commonly used to treat prominent muscle bands in the neck.

Botox works by blocking the nerve impulses and temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for wrinkles, giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed, and youthful appearance.

2. IDEAL CANDIDATES

Generally, candidates for Botox injection treatment include healthy individuals (between the ages of 18 and 70) with realistic expectations who would like to temporarily improve:

  1. Wrinkles in the upper third of the face, including the forehead and glabellar region (“frown” lines) and lateral canthal lines (“crow’s feet”).
  2. Mild wrinkling of the face.

3. THE PROCEDURE

Injections are performed in an outpatient setting and require no form of anaesthesia.

Botox® Cosmetic is injected directly into the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles (i.e. temporary wrinkles that appear during facial animation, such as frowning or squinting). A very fine needle is used to minimize pain associated with injection.

The procedure takes approximately 10-20 minutes, depending on the number or areas being treated and the effects of the injection last for approximately 3-6 months.

4. PRETREATMENT PREPARATION

Dr. Lee will perform a thorough medical evaluation during your preoperative consultation to ensure that you are medically fit for Botox injections. He will also revise your medication list, as certain medications may need to be temporarily stopped prior to injections.

5. RECOVERY

Since the procedure is done as an office procedure, no recovery time is needed, and patients can return to work or other activities immediately. We recommend that you do not lean/bend over for the first few hours post-injection and do not rub or massage the treated areas after your procedure in order to avoid having the Botox migrate to other area of your face

Botox® Cosmetic injections become fully apparent within 5-7 days and typically last for 3 to 6 months, with most individuals gradually returning to their former state. Dr. Lee will likely recommend Botox® Cosmetic be repeated every 3 to 4 months.

6. RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS

Botox® Cosmetic injections are a very safe procedure. However, as with any type of intervention, there are some associated risks/complications. These include:
  • Bruising and pain at the injection site
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Redness
  • Temporary facial weakness or drooping

NOTE: To minimize the risk of this temporary complication, DO NOT rub or massage the treated areas after your procedure in order to avoid having the Botox migrate to another area of your face and causing the temporary unwanted relaxing of a neighbouring facial muscle.

A very rare complication that can occur when Botox is injected into the neck and subsequently spreads beyond the treatment area; this can result in botulism like signs and symptoms, which may include: breathing problems, difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness, and slurred speech.

Dr. Lee will thoroughly discuss these risks (and possibly others) with you and answer any questions you might have prior to obtaining your consent for surgery.
